Dear Gerhard –
Over the years I have come to depend on your expertise and to admire your technical knowledge. I cannot imagine ever having someone else care for my pianos, either at home or in the various concert halls.
Sincerely,
André Previn

Dear Gerhard and Lisa,
There have been few things in my life that have shocked me, but your news about the closing of your showroom and Bosendorfer 's reprehensible behavior are not only shocking, but incomprehensible and disgraceful as well.
Until now, I was unable to think of "Bosendorfer" without intimately associating it with your personal expertise, knowledge and experience. The quality of your work, your commitment and sincerity were a huge and integral part of my respect for the brand. Your showroom, and the wonderful events you sponsored, were unique jewels amongst all exclusive luxury brands and elevated the word "Bosendorfer" into an "experience" as important as the pianos themselves. Your dissociation from Bosendorfer, and the demise of your showroom, has forever sullied the Bösendorfer name, and I will no longer think of the brand in the same way. Having a Bosendorfer piano was intimately tied, in my mind, to having a relationship with you. I used to feel proud to say I own a Bosendorfer. Now I will feel shame.
I know how hard you have worked to make your business a success. That it is to be dissolved just as it was beginning to bear fruit, and the manner in which it was terminated, is cruel and unjust. I am sure that Bosendorfer 's business will ultimately suffer as a result of their bad judgment. I am also sure that whatever new venture you begin will succeed and that your determination and creativity will find a more worthy outlet. I anticipate you will be even more successful now that you are free of the lack of support and appreciation you received from Vienna. You have my greatest admiration and respect, and I look forward with enthusiasm and excitement to hearing about your future plans.
Sincerely,
M. W. - Park Avenue, NYC

Dear Lisa and Gerhard,
Thanks so much for all the wonderful work you've done on my piano. Its full beauty did not bloom until Gerhard worked his magic on it and I will never allow another piano technician to work on it. I also can't thank you enough for all the help you provided when I had to move my piano to my new home. The move was a traumatic experience for me, but you made it so much easier and put my mind to rest setting me up with the best piano movers and crane operators in the business. I am saddened to hear that you are closing your doors - it is truly an enormous loss to the Bosendorfer company and the tri-state area. I will always return to you and Gerhard for all my Bosendorfer needs. No one understands, or appreciates, these pianos the way that the two of you do.
Thanks again,
V. S. - NY

I AM SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOU CLOSING THE BOSENDORFER OFFICE. YAMAHA HAS NO IDEA OF THE VALUE OF SERVICE YOU AND GERHARD PROVIDED TO THE NEW YORK CITY MUSIC COMMUNITY. WE WISH YOU AND GERHARD MUCH SUCCESS IN YOUR FUTURE ENDEAVORS AND HOPE WE CAN CONTINUE TO WORK TOGETHER DOWN THE ROAD.

Your kidding… Farewell? You just got here!? I'm perplexed and would love to know more information - what is happening to Bosendorfer - is Yamaha putting the entire company out of business?! It sounds like tragically horrible news… Absolutely horrible. It appears that they are ruining a legacy.
D. S. - NYC

Hi Lisa:
Yamaha doesn't know what it’s losing and I'm afraid it is so big it doesn't know it has hurt itself. It is big enough to survive, but they have lost the heart of what made Bösendorfer New York the place to buy a Bösendorfer, namely you and Gerhard. As my friend Chad said, it was only after playing one of Gerhard's pianos that he ever wanted to own a Bösendorfer.
You have been good for pianodom (I don't know if that's a word) and it's good for pianodom that you will continue with the excellence you provide.

As an avid pianist and music lover, I am so sorry that the Bosendorfer New York showroom is closing. Your team in NYC should be congratulated for your active concert program and for representing Bosendorfer so well.
Best wishes to you and Gerhard,

Dear Ms. Feldmann,
I am not a pianist, although I have organized concerts for young pianists. I am so extremely sorry to receive these news. One would have thought that the Japanese with their "tinny" pianos would be happy to have your expertise. For good reason I have never purchased, nor ever will purchase, a Japanese car.
Sincerely,

Hi Lisa,
So sorry to hear the news. You guys have done such wonderful work. I wish you the best and even though I didn't avail myself often enough of the opportunities to visit, I feel a loss for our city. I wish you and Gerhard all the best.

My dearest friend Lisa,
This is terrible news. I cannot understand how I did not hear of this till now. Bosendorfer was taken over by Yamaha? How could they do that after generations of such hard dedication making it a standard-bearer of Vienna!!! Can Hershey make Sacher Tortes???? Can McDonalds run Drei Husaren? Of course the worst sign is not keeping your store. That implies lack of commitment to the line as an independent entity. Ford could not handle Aston Martin and other high end cars after their string of takeovers...

Really sad, and in addition, what a completely stupid and nonstrategic decision by the new owners. I am very sorry to hear that. I hope that you and Herr Feldmann won't be too affected by this unfortunate development.
Your service has been marvelous and I hope I'll still have the pleasure of receiving your assistance in regards to my piano.
Last but not least, one hopes the pedigree of Bosendorfer won’t be tarnished by the new owner who seems not to have evidenced much refined taste...

My dear friend and fellow music lover Lisa....
I wanted to personally thank you again for putting together such a fine evening of wonderful music, food, wine and company. Also, for the use and display of the awesome Bosendorfer blue and silver masterpiece of original construction and wonderful restoration that Yamaha will only be able to dream about and, I hope, shall become their continual nightmare. As like those who tried their hand at taking over Tiffany’s, there are certain mainstays of excellence that become nasty snakes in the hands of the unskilled. Those who make adult toys such as speed boats, however excellent, will never truly internalize what Bosendorfer is. It is an entity beyond a name or company one can just buy. It is a spirit. If it was a say Porsche taking it over it would be one thing but Yamaha? I am sure several generations are trying to claw their way out of their graves right now to reclaim the desecrated sacred soil of sound quality!
RIP Bosendorfer.....
Rejoice.....
GFGPW has arisen from the ashes of Bosendorfer!
Sincerely and fondly,
V. B. - NYC

I am shocked and saddened. I received all notices of the wonderful concerts and only wished I could hail a taxi and join the fun... I watched this happen to GreyStone Showroom in LA and NYC a year ago. I don't know why when companies are on the verge of greatness the corporate group makes such strange decisions using "just business" as an excuse. There seems to be no heart in big business today. That is because there are no owners at the head!
Keep me posted. Thank you for your continued updates.
Sincerely,

Hello,
Although not a pianist, I am a connoisseur of quality piano recordings. As a High End Audio/Video consultant, I've found that only the best loudspeaker systems can truthfully reproduce a well recorded piano. One of my best tests for any loudspeaker is Reference Recordings RR-33DCD. This a Direct-To-CD recorded in 1988 by Dick Hyman which features the music of Fats Waller. What makes this recording so special is that it was made using a Bosendorfer 290E Reproducing Piano. This was my first introduction to the charm of a Bosendorfer.
Several years ago I traveled from San Francisco to the Stereophile Home Theater Show in New York City.
How thrilled I was to find your beautiful presentation of Bosendorfer pianos and the then new Bosendorfer Loudspeakers. I spent many happy hours over that weekend auditioning both. What a joy it is to hear even a child play a Bosendorfer. No other piano sounds like it.
I wish to thank you for your obvious passion for the Bosendorfer. I'm sorry that the Yamaha Corporation lacks the insight to see your value. I guess that a company that makes motorcycles, snow skis, outboard motors, musical instruments and audio equipment might just look at Bosendorfer as just another entry in their Profit and Loss Statement. Considering the interest in culture, especially music that the Japanese have, I'm truly puzzled by Yamaha's lack of respect for your company's dedication to their latest acquisition. What will become of Bosendorfer? At this juncture, I can only offer you my many thanks for your communications through the years and hope for your continued success sans Bosendorfer and Yamaha.
Sincerely,
J. H. - CA

...your presence in NYC has brought to light the Bosendorfer name to those who were only mildly familiar with or unaware of the brand all together.

Dear Bosendorfer NY!
We are shocked and sorry to hear your sad news, especially after our wonderful visit that you helped us arrange to the Vienna facilities last January. In fact, we toured the factory on the morning the Yamaha transfer took place. That tour was one of the major highlights of our entire trip to Europe, and we have been enthusiastically telling all our technician and pianist friends about Bosendorfer ever since!
Looking forward to your information and sending best wishes to you in your future endeavors-

Dear Lisa and Gerhard,
We’re shocked that you were terminated! Why? I cannot imagine their finding more dedicated and knowledgeable and committed people to manage a Bosendorfer thrust, and to participate in promoting the brand in this country. Did you negotiate too hard until they got upset? Are they so cheap that they saved a couple of $s by releasing you? Do they have so many knowledgeable people re: the piano and its heritage etc, that they could even afford to let you go?
G. G. - NYC
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi Lisa,
Well, I am long remiss in contacting you, and it looks like a lot of change has happened in the recent months!
I have read the information on the Bosendorfer NY website, and learned of the Yamaha purchase of Bosendorfer. I recall that Gerhard said that they were a candidate when he restored my piano in Aug-07. And, I also read up on the fact that they did not honor your contract to continue – that is a shame – they have absolutely no clue as to the value they are passing up! In my couple of visits to the studio, they were amazing experiences -- I immediately felt a sense of warmth and comfort, and trying the pianos was sheer exuberance. I remember telling everyone whom I encountered after my trials of your pianos that it was the best feeling… that the closest comparison was that the keys were melting like butter under my fingers – as a former aspiring performer, I can attest that the comfort level is so important, and your studio was such a unique find in establishing that for me… for that, I am so thankful!
Lisa: I wrote this email twice. I didn't send either because I felt that what I said, what I praised, weakened the message I want you to hear, namely, that you, Gerhard and your colleagues are a class act. You represented Boesendorfer and Austria well. You created the appearance that Boesendorfer needs in New York and the country, but more than that, you provided the substance to support the appearance. You made owning a Boesendorfer something desirable.
With highest regards for your work and you as people,
D. N. - CT
Dear Team at Gerhard Feldmann Grand Piano Works--
So sorry to receive this news. Though in your showroom but once, the enthusiasm which the people of Bösendorfer NY have for this instrument and for their work is palpable.
It distresses and disappoints me that in this age of so-called "awareness" and "personal sensitivity," individuals in the guise of the Yamaha corporate entity can treat so callously those whose love for their "product" (if you will) and their work is so great and, frankly, so atypical.
Please keep me on whatever email list you plan to maintain.
Good luck, good fortune and good health in this new beginning.
All the very best,
S. H. - MN
Dear Lisa --
Wow. I am in shock -- and very sad to hear the news (but, very happy to hear that it is also liberating and a new beginning).
You are a great friend, and I wanted to take a second to write you a personal note to express my thanks again for all the great memories at Bösendorfer New York... and with the acknowledgement that I know there will be more wonderful memories.
You are in my thoughts, as I am sure this is quite a difficult transition to make. I send all the best wishes for you, your husband, and all at Bösendorfer New York.
You are wonderful people; and, in your new beginning, may great things come your way -- I know they will because I see your excellence.
Your Friend,
Dear Bosendorfer NY,
I am saddened by this news. Since visiting your storefront last summer from Ottawa, Canada I have been looking forward to the day that I could afford to return and purchase one of your sublime instruments. My wife and I were treated with dignity and respect by your staff, an experience that was unmatched by all other piano dealers we had dealt with in the past. Your pianos were, bar none, the most impeccably prepared I have ever played or heard.
On behalf of my wife and I, I would like to congratulate you on your excellent contributions and wish you the best in your future endeavors.
Dear Lisa,
I was surprised to hear that the new management has decided to close the New York Bosendorfer store for business reasons. I always wondered if the Yamaha buyout was the right fit for Bosendorfer. It kind of hit me the same way when Mercedes acquired Chrysler and that relationship didn't work-out. I recall my uncle's experience in trying to open some Penny's stores in Japan many years ago. He complained about seemingly having certain things in agreement only to find out the next day there was no agreement at all. Eventually after two years Penny's decided not to open any stores in Japan.
I have voiced my complaint about Yamaha on a Bosendorfer owners website, I intend to write the new CEO too to let him know of my dissatisfaction.
I'm happy that you will continue with a new store in the same location. I appreciate your support and newsletters providing additional venues for the Bosendorfer experience. Any business I have with Bosendorfer will have to be through you.
Sincerely,
J. F. - UT
Hi Lisa
When I was in Japan, I used to work for Yamaha so when I heard Yamaha is going to take over Bosendorfer, I felt so sad. Because I've never liked the way they think.
(I know I should not talk like that but......)
Anyway, hope Yamaha will maintain Bosendorfer's great stuff.
Please keep in touch and all the best.
S. G. - NY
I am saddened to hear of this closing. It is most peculiar for me to have such a reaction because I do not own nor have I ever played the piano. I discovered your showroom in the design center while shopping for a client, and the genuine, warm welcome and gracious sharing of information made me an ‘ambassador’ for this extraordinary brand. I will forward this information to a few clients that may be in a position to support the sale. Thank you for the candor of this e-mail, thank you for all of the invitations to past performances. I wish you only the very best as you go forward and trust you will maintain the level of excellence and integrity that so distinguished you in your field.
Thank you for your years of remarkable service and performance. I regret that we are witnessing the demise of your work.
Dear Lisa and Gerhard, There are no words, or there are too many! As Joseph Campbell said, You follow your bliss, and you two have , and will continue to do so. You made an oasis of beauty and serenity in this ever changing world. The talents you have fostered are at times awesome. The pianos spoil one for the incredible sound they produce. I have no doubt that you will continue this path of serving and endowing us with beauty. We look forward to more in the future, and know it is coming. "In the void is the potential". The runes tell us. It is waiting for you.
With appreciation and thanks,
Superbly worded and I am so very sad about the amount of ignorance at Bosendorfer’s management. With your quality of work and your knowledge I am not worried about your future. Wishing you much success
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lisa, I'm very sorry to read your last email.
My wife and I have just returned from Vienna, and of course we stopped by the Boesendorfer building to be delighted to find that a concert was to be held there, just like in New York. (In memoriam to Laszlo Szelenyi).
In fact we told one of the managers there, that we loved going to the New York showroom, when time permitted - mostly in the summer - to hear jazz and classical music.
We certainly hope that you will persevere. I just can't believe that Yamaha would bury the great Boesendorfer brand under Yamaha. It doesn't make much marketing sense. But the Japanese businessmen are never very communicative, so who knows?! (That's not racial, that's cultural!)
Good luck to you and your husband. Thank you for all the great music we heard there.
M. B. - CT

Dear Lisa,
I’m shocked and heartbroken to hear your news. I still can’t quite believe it. This doesn’t make sense and I’m going to need a few days to absorb the facts. In fact, I’d like to generate some discussion on my Web site about this development. I’ll keep you posted…
It might interest you to know that someone sent an e-mail to my site this morning about this sad event. Here’s the text:
I can't believe that the new Yamaha owners have decided to discontinue the Bosendorfer store in New York mainly as a business decision. If the Yamaha owners realized the public relations and support that this store did for Bosendorfer owner such as myself they would understand the complete blunder they have made in this business decision. I seriously doubt the Yamaha owners appreciate the kind of jewel they own, and they are ruining it.
Please know that many are saddened by this news…
I’ll keep in touch.
My heart goes out to you…

Dear Lisa & Gerhard
We were disappointed to have missed your Birthday/Farwell party, all the more so because of the “farewell” part.
I am so glad that we had the opportunity to attend as many of your salons as we did – beginning with Jo’s first lecture/recital to your Christmas party. They gave us such pleasure.
It would sadden me to think of this as “the end”, rather I believe that when one door closes, there is another waiting to be opened. I am certain, Lisa, that with your passion, perseverance and boundless energy you will find another niche for yourself, and that Gerhard will continue to perform his magic on those special pianos.
I hope you will continue to consider us part of your extended “family” and that you will keep us informed of your progress.
With love and best wishes for much success in future ventures,
E. & R. B. - MA
